School’s in Session
September 2009
Your employees may be out of school, but you can still offer them an education. Since the risk of developing most types of cancer can be reduced by changes in a person's lifestyle and early detection can be the key to recovery, providing quality information about this pervasive health issue is an ideal choice.

Break the Silence about cancer
|
|
Ovarian cancer
The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) Break the Silence campaign is a national education program created to increase awareness and encourage public dialogue and discussions between women and their physicians about the symptoms and risk factors of ovarian cancer.
Prostate cancer
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), when a man understands the nature and risks of prostate cancer and the risks, benefits, and alternatives to screening, he can make a decision consistent with his preferences and values.
Break the Silence communication suggestions:
- Forward the conversation starter linked under Resources to all female employees to spur patient/physician discussion.
- Contact the American Cancer Society and request a speaker to conduct a health awareness seminar during the lunch hour. The toll-free number is 1-800-ACS-2345.
- Utilize the flyer provided under Resources to promote awareness about the importance of prostate cancer awareness.
- Conduct a Cancer Awareness Fair. Invite health providers from local hospitals and cancer organizations to come in and set up table displays with cancer-related information. Create a nutrition table with foods known to fight cancer-causing organisms.

Nutrition tips
|
|
Mushrooms may not be as bright and colorful as broccoli or carrots, but they pack quite a punch when it comes to nutrition. With numerous varieties to choose from, mushrooms offer nutritional benefits often associated with meat, beans, or grains.
Get the most out of mushrooms:
- Choose well-shaped mushrooms with firm texture. Avoid spots and slime.
- Refrigerate in original container or paper bag up to 1 week.
- Mushrooms are fat free, very low in sodium, cholesterol free, low in calories, high in riboflavin, and they are a good source of niacin, copper, and pantothenate.
- Mushrooms are also the leading source of the valuable antioxidant selenium in the produce aisle.
