National Immunization Awareness Month

August 2009
August is the perfect time to remind your employees to catch up on their vaccinations. Parents are enrolling their children in school, students are entering college, and healthcare workers are preparing for the upcoming flu season.

Are you up-to-date? Vaccinate!

August is recognized as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). The goal of NIAM is to increase awareness about immunizations throughout the life span, from infants to the elderly.

Promotional ideas:

  • Distribute the immunization schedules provided under Resources to employees and encourage them to speak with their doctor about scheduling a vaccine.
  • Post the Adolescent and Adult Vaccine Quiz to the company intranet. Invite employees to test their knowledge by taking the quiz. Encourage them to print their results and discuss them with their doctor at their next office visit.
  • Provide each employee with a blank vaccine record form.
  • Display National Immunization Awareness materials on a wellness table throughout the month of August.

Nutrition Tips

While tomatoes are technically a fruit, they are primarily served and prepared as a vegetable. No matter which way you classify them, tomatoes are one of the most popular items in this food group eaten by Americans. They are high in vitamin C, provide beta-carotene, and contain large amounts of a valuable antioxidant called lycopene.

Get the most out of tomatoes:

  • Ripe tomatoes are completely red and reddish-orange. They have a sweet aroma and yield slightly to gentle palm pressure.
  • Most supermarket tomatoes are not fully ripe. Set in a bowl or ventilated paper bag and store at room temperature to ripen. Do not refrigerate.
  • You can use tomatoes in a wide variety of ways: add to salads and main dishes, use as a base for sauces and soups, try stuffing a large tomato with cooked corkscrew pasta and vegetables and baking in a muffin tin.
