Seasonal Advice

July 2009
The summer offers a lot of time to spend with friends and family outdoors. Whether you are hosting a BBQ, vacationing at the shore, or celebrating the 4th of July holiday, the warm days of summer can also increase risk of injuries and illness.

Seasonal Advice

Keep your employees and their families safe and healthy this summer by educating them about important seasonal issues.

Promotional ideas:

  • Post the handouts provided under Resources throughout the workplace (i.e., near elevators, in restrooms, at stairwell entrances, etc.).
  • Add the summer safety links under Resources to your organization’s website.
  • Place a summer safety phrase in your email signature, and encourage employees to do the same.
  • Make bookmarks with summer safety tips, and distribute them to your employees.
  • Provide coupons for discounted swimming lessons at a local YMCA or other community center.
  • Offer onsite CPR classes, and highlight the Healthy LifestylesSM safety reimbursement benefit.

Nutrition Tips

Widely thought to be the most popular berry fruit in the world, strawberries are as healthy as they are delicious. Although today they are available year-round, strawberries are at the peak of their season from April through July.

Get the most out of strawberries:

  • Select fully colored berries that are firm, plump, have a sweet aroma, and still have the stem attached. A stained strawberry container may mean the berries inside are soft.
  • Eat fresh berries within a few days of purchase. Do not wash or remove stems until ready to use.
  • Use berries to make your favorite foods even better: slice and add to cereal; blend with yogurt for smoothies; or use on top of waffles, pancakes, reduced-fat ice cream, pies, and cakes.
